Do you know how commuting Scooter Libby’s sentence protects him or the Pres. more than a pardon?

I think the logic is something like this, but I am not sure of it all. The Scooter Libby commutation protects the President more than a pardon would because….a pardon erases the guily verdict and would make him open to being called again, and people think he was really protecting the Pres. and VP. With a commutation of the sentence, his conviction holds, and that would be that (or something like that).

I saw this in a TV interview, but memory got blurred.

Wasn’t the Scoot charged with obstructing justice by refusing to tell the prosecution **** Cheney’s role in getting CIA assets “liquidated”? So if Bush intervenes in that sentence, is he obstructing a justice meted out for obstructing justice? Does this mean, Bush = 2(Nixon)?
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Vice President **** Cheney’s chief of staff testified Thursday he believes prosecutors of billionaire financier Marc Rich “misconstrued the facts and the law” when they went after Rich on tax evasion charges.

The testimony from Lewis “Scooter” Libby, who represented Rich dating back to 1985 but stopped working for him in the spring of 2000, came during a contentious, hours-long House committee hearing into former President Bill Clinton’s eleventh-hour pardons.
Uh, the point is, Libby was covering for Bush and got busted. Now Bush is covering for himself.

My friend is asking the courts to commute his felony sentence to a misdemeanor. The public defender asked him to write a letter to the judge telling why it is in the best interest of justice to grant his wishes. What reasons would a judge look for in reducing his charge?????
