I’m self employed. When I drive my work truck from my home to a job, is that considered commuting?

My husband’s work requires him to drive his own car to work every day and he’s not even supposed to carpool with anyone. This is all on the off-hand chance that they need him to go somewhere or move job sites. I know commuting miles aren’t normally deductible, unless you’re going to training seminar out of the area.

I live in Northern NJ and i’m entertaining job opportunities in Manhattan(NYC) some people tell me that i need to account for “double taxes” when negotiating for a salary. I just want to know how much more i should expect to pay in taxes when working in NYC vs. any other location in New Jersey. Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide.

Just this morning, he said his tax accountant tells him he can write off his miles driving to work, provided he has gas receipts and a travel log. Does anyone know how this is possible?
What if you had flexible hours, and you’re on the clock as soon as you start doing media research on your home computer. Would travel then be work related? They were also saying they can decuct their cable bill because they talk about what they have seen on TV for the radio show.

I am a consultant, but I only have one customer. I typically go to the same place 4 or 5 times a week, but it is 65 miles away from me, in another state. Is my 130 mile daily round trip ALL commuting miles or is there some sort of a limit? I heard if you travel over a certain distance, some portion of that MAY deductible. Does anyone have any info on that?

I didn’t keep receipts for total commuting costs per month throughout the year (don’t ask why) for traveling to work. The commuting cost is in the hundreds and I would like tax return on this. What other means can I prove this cost? Bank statements? Any suggestions?
In response to everyone’s comments, I would like to add a little more detail to my question. I commute 4 hours a day to work, I buy bus tickets costing almost $400 per month on top of NYC MTA monthly pass costing $81…it’s insane the amount in cost just for traveling alone. So all of this really does not qualify for tax deductible? If not, then I need to seriously move lol.

My job was about 2 hours away but since then I have found a job closer. I had rented the apartment for 11 months starting on August of 2005.

I am a full time college student, living off of campus & commuting about 35-40 min to school everyday. Someone told me that I should be saving my gas receipts to use on my taxes when I fill out the student information, is this correct??

I drive 120 miles to work and back a day, averaging about ~$250-300 in gas a month. Is there somewhere on the tax return form or some provision where I can write this off?

I’m employed as a consultant, and my employer places me at different companies where I consult. Does my commute, which is a daily commute to this workplace, count as deductible expense given that it is at a location other than my employer’s offices? FWIW, I have never even visited my employer’s office, and since joining my employer, all my travel has been to this one workplace.
