Shoudl I convert a road bike to a straight-bar commuter?

I want a high-end commuter. My donor bike is a $2K Litespeed Firenze. I wonder if it’s worth converting it to a straight-bar commuter with the Rapid Rise shifting. My other option is to add slicks to my lightweight hardtail and sell the road bike. Which would you do?

What is a good commuter bike for a student?
