I am hoping that somebody might have done some extensive homework on this subject and provide some hard numbers rather than just an opinion.

I am leaning towards a Honda Civic but there are several models to choose – do any of them get any better mileage than another?

I am considering a relocation to Levittown, Long Island (NY) to be near my girlfriend and also taking up a nice job that is located in Stamford, Connecticut. Google Maps says it’s 1 hour and 5 minutes. Mapquest says it’s 1 hour even. I know Long Island and NYC metro area traffic can get really nasty so I wanted to know if anyone has done this commute or can tell me how long it REALLY takes on average.

How about the tolls?

Any alternative options? I know there is a ferry, but I think it would take longer. And I don’t know of any mass transit options (other than Amtrak, which I believe would take longer than an hour)

BTW, Levittown would be close to Hempstead, Hicksville, Farmingdale, Melville – that general area. And I’d be right off the Hempstead Turnpike (Rt. 24)

Any ideas???

Is this worth it?

I am about to start college and live at home and want to sell my car and just have a bike, If I needed a car I could just borrow one of my parents. is it smart to do this? Iva always wanted a bike and the lower gas and insurance payments will help me get more money together.

I live in Northern NJ and i’m entertaining job opportunities in Manhattan(NYC) some people tell me that i need to account for “double taxes” when negotiating for a salary. I just want to know how much more i should expect to pay in taxes when working in NYC vs. any other location in New Jersey. Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide.

I am really trying my luck here to see if anyone happens to be familiar with the following two places:

I want to find out how long is the commuting time between the two places:

Address A: 528 RIVERSIDE DR, Manhattan, New York City
Address B: 258 PARK AVE, Manhattan, New York City, near the Grand Central Terminal Station.

The following computer generated routes gives an estimate of about 44 minutes, and some wise men advised me that I should add 10 minutes or more to it just to be safe.

http://www.hopstop.com/?advanced=y&mode_switched=y&submitted=on&city1=newyork&city2=newyork&county1=36061&address1=528%20RIVERSIDE%20DR&county2=36061&address2=258%20PARK%20AVE&day=1&time=28800&mode=s&language=en&transfer_priority=1

So I am guessing it will be 1 hour.

I need your opinion … What do you think is the estimated commuting time?

Thanks a lot!
Hi NYC Chutzpah,

Thanks for your answer. So how many minutes in total? And what if the train does not come right away? What’s the average waiting time? We need to estimate the worst case, best case and average case, right?
Thanks again!

what I mean is I figured I would put about 13k less miles on my car per year which is what I do now and you save on gas but then you do have to pay for your bus fare and subway.

Katie L asked:

I am looking into buying an inexpensive used bike (Craigslist and at garage sales) for a 10-mile commute to work. Since I obviously want to save on gas, what are some things I should ask a potential seller ahead of time about the bike so I don’t drive all the way there and end up disappointed? Any general tips on used bike shopping?
